about

As John Rolodex extends his Drum & Bass tenure into its third decade, he has become reflective. Hailing from Western Canada, his path in a genre with its roots on the opposite side of the hemisphere, has epitomized the outsider DIY mentality. In the early 2000s Rolodex planted a flag with well-regarded releases on Metalheadz, Tech Itch and Dread Recordings; the sounds of which continue to inform his unique aesthetic today.

On the heals of the his acclaimed Fingerprints EP and with the anticipation of his recently-announced return to Metalheadz on the minds of DnB fans old and new, Machinist Music presents the next chapter in what has been nicknamed the ‘reflection series’.

Blueprints EP brings together Rolodex’s love of cinematic atmospheres, dance floor payload and breakbeat finery with the discerning expertise of a seasoned veteran of both the buttons and the wheels.

“All I Believe” reaches deep into the soul of betrayal. Rolodex pushes his musical boundaries with an original piano and string arrangement. Burning vocals from Calgary’s Candice Fudge unfold a veiled personal narrative. The intro makes way for a few thick bass notes, teasing the imminent onslaught. The reesey drop reminisces classic Ray Keith but recontextualized with drum work firmly rooted in 2020. The track unfolds with multiple rhythmic changes and distinct sections, rarely found in today’s Drum & Bass fodder.

On “Looks Like Trouble” John takes a more lighthearted approach. Mysterious jazz chords pave the way for cinematic dialogue unfolding the set-up for a hard-boiled detective plot. The drop balances upfront stabs with a smoky film noir atmosphere. A tasty roller that will both fit in and stand out in nearly any set.

“Dust” is the first ever collaboration between John Rolodex and Machinist Music partner Dioptrics. Continuing with the EPs cinematic flavours, “Dust” jumps off with curious sci-fi dialogue. The Track drops with precision into a stripped-back roller featuring a uniquely-nasty bassline designed to shake the building. Classic breakbeat fills divulge the techstep influences of these veteran North American beatsmiths.

Fingerprints EP signalled the return to form for John Rolodex, and its successor, Blueprints EP, sets the pace of what’s to come in the ‘reflection series’ and Rolodex’s output as a whole.
